I'm not hot on: hot water only taps in bathrooms

As someone who is a well-practised fan of staying alive, drinking water is part of my daily routine. Partly due to my tendency to try and avoid work, I also often find myself drinking even more water during the workday, often having three or four water bottles full whilst in the workplace.

As a consequence of all that drinking (no not that drinking), it is an inevitability that I will at some point have to frequent a bathroom away from home. You may think I am going to slate the cleanliness of the facilities or the air power of the hand driers, but no - at least not in this post, I am generally satisfied to moderately impressed with the work of the facilities team.

The thing I find senseless is the inclusion of separate hot and cold taps, with no plughole, when the temperature of the hot tap is so hot that renders it impossible to use unless you fancy incorporating third degree burns into your bathroom routine.

Effectively, the only solution is just to avoid using the hot tap at all and use the arctic temperature water like someone from the dark ages.

What irks me even more is that the facilities teams are clearly aware of the temperature of the water, with many of these bathrooms helpfully containing labels warning Caution Hot Water placed adjacent to the hot water tap.

I simply cannot imagine what they think the hot water taps are useful for if they are too hot for hand washing and not safe to drink from. Perhaps they were overwhelmed with someone who wanted to soften their playdough and decided to set a precedent that through unintended consequences now means that I am forced to use cold water to wash my hands.

Or equally, why they haven't elected to use a mixer tap or just not install the hot water at all.

Unfortunately for these great questions of life, we will never know quite what the answer is.

In the meantime, I'll just have to soldier on with slightly cold hands when using a certain type of bathroom, what a martyr I am.

Kind regards,
