Proper mailbox management - a lost art among students?

I don't know quite what it is, but young people today don't have the same respect for the wonders of electronic mail that I did at their age.

Having spoken to some university students recently, I realised that it was not uncommon for them to have thousands of unread emails, as newsletters and automated mailings continue to clog their main inbox, left unread to pile up.

Clearly, such a system is unfunctional and surely leads to them missing critical updates and personal correspondence that clearly should take priority. It seems to me that such a problem is eminently solvable - it takes perhaps 5 minutes to set up some folders and rules in order to sort through the bulk of the email mass, and any stragglers can easily be dealt with manually.

However, very few seem to have the initiative to do so, and I can only imagine the shock they receive when they are suddenly in the workplace and missing a single email could spell disaster.

If only they'd had practise effectively managing their inboxes at university...

Kind regards,
